Course Description

Williamsburg Golf Club, formally Williamsburg Country Club, was established in 1958. The land, of great historical interest, was a site in the Civil War involving the capture of Fort Magruder. Fort Magruder was the center of the Williamsburg Line. During the Battle of Williamsburg, General Magruder's men were key in delaying Union troops on their way to Richmond. The land, fertile farm land, later served as a storage and shipping point for cattle in both World War I and II.The Club is situated on 153 acres of rolling fairways, lake and marshes serving as the natural habitat for several species of birds and fish. The Course also served as a host for the qualifying tournament of the 2004 USGA Women's Open along with several other premier Four Ball tournaments in Virginia. In 2009, new ownership enlisted John LaFoy, Golf Course architect, to update and modernize the course while maintaining the original character. The complete course rebuild consisted of new tees, fairways, greens, bunkers, cart paths and a state of the art practice facility. The Golf Course was not the only area of the club that would undergo major renovation. Interior designer, Reese Fowler of Seattle was hired to update the Clubhouse. The complete remodel, interior and exterior, perfected the colonial charm of the Club. The rich enhancements included granite counter tops, custom cherry wood lockers, an expanded Grille Room, beautiful furnishings and a patio overlooking the 1st and 10th tee and fairways and the 9th and 18th greens. The Club re-opened in June of 2010 as Williamsburg Golf Club, the leading private golf club on the peninsula. In 2016 Williamsburg Golf Club was named Coastal Virginia Magazine's "Best Golf Club" at the Gold Award level.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Williamsburg Golf Club

Get answers to common questions about playing Williamsburg Golf Club and what to expect.

How difficult is Williamsburg Golf Club for mid-handicap golfers?

Williamsburg Golf Club presents a demanding test. The 130.0 slope indicates balanced but noticeable difficulty. The course rating of 71.0 reflects on scoring relative to par 72.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Williamsburg Golf Club?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 5635 yards. The back tees extend to 6399.0 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Williamsburg Golf Club?

With a course rating of 71.0 and par 72, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 72 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Williamsburg Golf Club and how does yardage affect play?

Stretching to 6399.0 yards from the back tees, it does not overwhelm length but rewards accuracy.

What type of course is Williamsburg Golf Club and how should I play it?

The course follows a traditional Parkland design philosophy. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Williamsburg Golf Club strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 130.0 and yardage reaching 6399.0 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
