It is located within reach of Manchester, the Golden Coast of Southport and the Royals - Birkdale, Lytham and Liverpool. As the oldest Club in Wigan, and as you would expect from a premier club, we offer a quality course and club house facilities with a variety of socials. Whilst only a few miles from both the M6 and M61, the only sound is one of the countryside. Membership policy is to control numbers so members can enjoy the course without queuing. This also ensures an excellent playing surface. Membership is available in certain categories, including corporate. Visitors are most welcome, with the visit arranged through our PGA Golf Manager. We are pleased to accommodate anything up to large charity / corporate days. We are proud to have recently hosted the Lancashire PGA Day, Lancashire Amateur Championships, Wigan Youth Zone and Wigan Boys and Girls Club, Joining Jack and Heartbeat Charity Days. The club house is Arley Hall, an historic building surrounded by a 12th century moat. Lawns edge the moat, which together with the Hall, make for a truly relaxing location to debate a round of golf, enjoy the traditional food and bar or have an away day. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Wigan

Get answers to common questions about playing Wigan and what to expect.

How difficult is Wigan for mid-handicap golfers?

From a scoring perspective, Wigan challenges consistency. With a slope of 120, it remains playable for a wide handicap range. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 70.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Wigan?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Wigan?

With a course rating of 70 and par 70, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 70 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Wigan and how does yardage affect play?

Measuring 6500 yards at maximum length, scoring depends more on placement than raw power.

What type of course is Wigan and how should I play it?

Wigan is designed as a Parkland layout. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Wigan strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
