Course Description

The Pueblo Country Club was organized in April 1903 by O.G. Pope, Harlin J. Smith, and Richard O'Neil. It was their vision to provide the community with a place for friends and family to enjoy leisure time together. The Club was incorporated as a non-profit, private Club on February 20, 1904. The first members recruited friends, family, and neighbors to help clear the rugged course of cactus and sage brush. The first round of golf was played on June 1, 1903, making Pueblo Country Club the second oldest Club in Colorado. The old 9-hole course was officially opened on May 31, 1926 with 2,897 yards of fine greens and fairways, making it a Par 35 course. Later in 1964-1965, Henry Hughes improved the original design with an additional nine holes, laying the ground work for the amazing 18-hole championship course it is today. The first clubhouse was constructed in 1903, and remains today at the corner of Fifth Ave and 29th St as a reminder of just how far we have come over the years. The current clubhouse was built in 1926. It was designed by Harvey Dakin, local architect, with an Italian Renaissance style. Since then, the clubhouse has undergone several renovations to modernize the building and add square feet. The Olympic-sized swimming pool was constructed in 1964, and has undergone re-design over the years. The indoor tennis facility was constructed in 1983 with total of three standard courts. Today, it has a total of five hard courts.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Pueblo Country Club

Get answers to common questions about playing Pueblo Country Club and what to expect.

How difficult is Pueblo Country Club for mid-handicap golfers?

Pueblo Country Club is regarded as a strategically complex layout. The 137.0 slope indicates balanced but noticeable difficulty. The course rating of 76.2 reflects on scoring relative to par 71.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Pueblo Country Club?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 5372 yards. The back tees extend to 6507.0 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Pueblo Country Club?

With a course rating of 76.2 and par 71, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 71 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Pueblo Country Club and how does yardage affect play?

Stretching to 6507.0 yards from the back tees, it does not overwhelm length but rewards accuracy.

What type of course is Pueblo Country Club and how should I play it?

The course follows a traditional Parkland design philosophy. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Pueblo Country Club strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 137.0 and yardage reaching 6507.0 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
