Course Description

In 1924, an 18-hole Devereux Emmet original golf course began operation as the Lawrence Country Club. The Village of Lawrence acquired the foreclosed property in 1936 following the Great Depression. At the time, the Club was a public facility, open to all residents and non-residents alike, until 1960.In 1960, at the insistence of the members of the Lawrence Golf Club (a private organization of golfers who played at the facility), the course was closed to daily greens fee play and designated as a "self-sustaining improvement" under New York State Law supported principally by annual membership fees. The Village government appointed a Park Commission to operate the facility as the "Lawrence Village Country Club," and under its aegis, a new, large clubhouse was constructed. In place of the old clubhouse, a tennis facility was built in 1966, and subsequently enlarged to contain, at present, nine Har-Tru courts, two Pickleball courts, and a separate clubhouse. The Club underwent a full redesign in the late 1960s, utilizing additional acreage, which the Village had acquired to lengthen the course to its present 6,500 yards. The project, which left only one hole unchanged, was completed in 1969.Two new holes (#14 and #15) were built in a portion of the Village's nature preserve in 1998, replacing the old holes (#10 and #11), which were converted to a state of the art heated indoor and outdoor practice facility with two private simulator rooms. The entire property, which also includes a 140 slip marina and clubhouse on Bannister Creek, is still governed by the Village's Park Commission today.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Lawrence Village

Get answers to common questions about playing Lawrence Village and what to expect.

How difficult is Lawrence Village for mid-handicap golfers?

Lawrence Village is regarded as a strategically complex layout. The 120 slope rating keeps it accessible for developing players. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 70.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Lawrence Village?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Lawrence Village?

With a course rating of 70 and par 70, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 70 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Lawrence Village and how does yardage affect play?

At a full length of 6500 yards, it balances distance with positional strategy.

What type of course is Lawrence Village and how should I play it?

Architecturally, it reflects a Parkland style. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Lawrence Village strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
