Course Description

Hogs Head consists of Hogs Head Golf Club (HHGC) and the Lodge atHogs Head. The golf course is newly designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.(RTJ) and gets its name from its location on the Hogs Head peninsula(a marine bearing point marking the opening to Ballinskelligs Bay fromthe North Atlantic). The project was the inspiration of Mr. Tony Alvarez II and Mr. BryanMarsal, to provide a place built by friends for friends who share the love, camaraderie and fellowship of the game of golf. The Hogs Head Golf Club's founders directed RTJ to design a coursethat would possess certain key qualities including naturalness, variety, elements of classic design and strategy, combined with a fun walkableexperience, capped off with a warm and friendly 19th hole.In terms of naturalness, Hogs Head Golf Club has the tremendous advantageof vistas capturing mountains in the background, the Finglas River flowingthrough the course, the majestic cliff holes overlooking the Ballinskelligs Bayand the charm of the seaside village of Waterville. This rich visual tapestry hasbeen combined with a links feel offering a natural flow across the landscape.Hogs Head Golf course offers a variety of playing options and is divided into aRiverside Nine and a Seaside Nine, where both the river and sea play importantroles respectively in the defence of par. The course from the tips measures 7,140yards and is a par of 72 consisting of a core of five par 3's and five par 5's.Our VisionTo be recognised as one of the world's foremost golfing destinations, with luxury accommodation and service facilities that exceed our guestsexpectations at all times.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Hogs Head

Get answers to common questions about playing Hogs Head and what to expect.

How difficult is Hogs Head for mid-handicap golfers?

Players often find Hogs Head technically exacting. With a slope of 120, it remains playable for a wide handicap range. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 72.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Hogs Head?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Hogs Head?

With a course rating of 70 and par 72, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 72 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Hogs Head and how does yardage affect play?

Measuring 6500 yards at maximum length, scoring depends more on placement than raw power.

What type of course is Hogs Head and how should I play it?

Hogs Head is designed as a Links layout. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Hogs Head strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
