Course Description

Diablo Country Club is a welcoming and unique place nestled at the foot of Mt. Diablo. Opened 100 years ago as California's original family oriented golf club, the traditions of excellence and sportsmanship for generations of members stand the test of time. The grounds, originally an 1874 country estate for the families of railroad barons and gold mining icons, was converted in 1914 to a world class golf and country club by our founder Robert Noble Burgess. His vision, to create "A Community With an Ideal" is evidenced in many of the structures and activities that exist to this day. From refreshments in our Carriage Lounge, circa 1881, to youth swim competition since 1914, entertaining in our Red Horse Tavern, Estd. 1917 or a round of golf on our iconic course designed by legends Jack Neville and William Watson, Diablo Country Club continues its tradition of being a welcoming place for our members and guests.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Diablo

Get answers to common questions about playing Diablo and what to expect.

How difficult is Diablo for mid-handicap golfers?

Diablo is regarded as a strategically complex layout. With a slope of 120, it remains playable for a wide handicap range. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 71.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Diablo?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Diablo?

With a course rating of 70 and par 71, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 71 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Diablo and how does yardage affect play?

Measuring 6500 yards at maximum length, scoring depends more on placement than raw power.

What type of course is Diablo and how should I play it?

Diablo is designed as a Parkland layout. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Diablo strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
