Course Description
Carnwath Golf Club is a delightful, mature course having been founded in 1907. Situated on a piece of land called 'Gallow Hill', to the west of the village of Carnwath, the then '9 hole course' was laid out by Mr Willie Auchterlonie, an Open champion, coveted club maker and contributor to the Jubilee course layout in St Andrew's. Following completion, the course was formally opened in front of sizeable crowds by Lady Lockhart, the wife of Sir Simon M. Lockhart, Honorary President of the club and laird of the estates, on 29th June 1907. The course was finally extended to 18 holes in May 1922 and by 1936 Carnwath Golf Club was visited by more than 3,000 golfers annually.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about Carnwath
Get answers to common questions about playing Carnwath and what to expect.
How difficult is Carnwath for mid-handicap golfers?
From a scoring perspective, Carnwath challenges consistency. This slope level makes it manageable compared to championship venues. The course rating of 69.1 reflects on scoring relative to par 70.
What tees should a 15 handicap play at Carnwath?
A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 5591 yards. The back tees extend to 5953.0 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.
What is considered a good score at Carnwath?
With a course rating of 69.1 and par 70, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 70 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.
How long is Carnwath and how does yardage affect play?
Stretching to 5953.0 yards from the back tees, distance is less of a barrier than precision.
What type of course is Carnwath and how should I play it?
The course follows a traditional Links design philosophy. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.
What features make Carnwath strategically challenging?
The combination of a slope rating of 124.0 and yardage reaching 5953.0 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
