Course Description

Carnoustie Golf Links is an iconic, world-leading golf destination in Scotland and home to Golf's Greatest Test. Golf has been played at the Links since the 16th century and it was Carnoustie natives who went on to establish the Professional Golfer's Associations of America and Australia. We look forward to warmly welcoming you to play our fantastic three courses, The Championship Course, The Burnside Course and The Buddon Course. The Championship Course played host to The 147th Open in 2018, with Francesco Molinari becoming the Champion Golfer of the Year. The Championship Course has hosted eight Open Championships, two Women's Opens and two Senior Open making it one of the very few to have done so in the UK. It is one of the three courses used for the annual Dunhill Links. In 2019, the Championship Course was named the World's Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards. The Burnside Course oozes character and from the back tees is a splendid test of golf. It was here in 1953 where the great Ben Hogan shot 70 to help him qualify for the Open Championship which he subsequently won.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Burnside

Get answers to common questions about playing Burnside and what to expect.

How difficult is Burnside for mid-handicap golfers?

Burnside is regarded as a strategically complex layout. With a slope of 120, it remains playable for a wide handicap range. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 68.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Burnside?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Burnside?

With a course rating of 70 and par 68, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 68 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Burnside and how does yardage affect play?

Measuring 6500 yards at maximum length, scoring depends more on placement than raw power.

What type of course is Burnside and how should I play it?

Burnside is designed as a Links layout. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Burnside strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
