Academic achievement is excellent - ranked among the top 5 co-educational boarding schools in the UK at A Level by The Daily Telegraph in recent years and the highest mark in the UK in Spanish Pre-U for two consecutive years. However, the school believes that exam results are but one part of academic education and the school has developed a unique Academic Enrichment programme which is open to all with enquiring minds and a love of learning. Participation, hard work and a strong sense of community, teamwork and integrity are hallmarks at Canford. Beyond the classroom, there is a diverse range of intellectual, artistic, cultural and sporting activities on offerfor all abilities and pupils are encouraged to make connections between all aspects of their learning. For those who wish, there are the opportunities to take chosen activities to the highest levels. In sport, for example, rowers regularly represent GB and all Canford hockey teams were county champions for two consecutive years. In the arts, pupils won places on prestigious Art courses at Kingston, a choral scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford and places in the National Youth Theatre this year. Facilities at Canford are excellent and include a state of the art sports complex, modern theatre, separate music school and art gallery. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Canford School

Get answers to common questions about playing Canford School and what to expect.

How difficult is Canford School for mid-handicap golfers?

Canford School is regarded as a strategically complex layout. The 120 slope rating keeps it accessible for developing players. The course rating of 70 reflects on scoring relative to par 34.

What tees should a 15 handicap play at Canford School?

A 15 handicap golfer should consider tees closer to 6000 yards. The back tees extend to 6500 yards, which makes approach shots longer and scoring more challenging.

What is considered a good score at Canford School?

With a course rating of 70 and par 34, a mid-handicap golfer would typically score in the mid to high 80s. Stronger players aiming to break 34 must manage approach shots and avoid penalty strokes.

How long is Canford School and how does yardage affect play?

At a full length of 6500 yards, it balances distance with positional strategy.

What type of course is Canford School and how should I play it?

Architecturally, it reflects a Parkland style. Overall, the setup will reward players who place the ball in safe positions far from hazards. Also, type of shot is more crucial rather than just trying to gain distance.

What features make Canford School strategically challenging?

The combination of a slope rating of 120 and yardage reaching 6500 yards creates consistent pressure on approach shots. You will need to balance risk and reward, especially on longer par 4s and protected greens.
